Expert

As we wait, here are my latest findings:

I (as an adoption waiting expert) have found two books that I would consider essential for any family adopting from Russia.

1.  Simple Language Russian for Adoptive Families.  Katie and I have purchased no less than 5 books on how to learn Russian and this is by far the best.  You won't speak fluently, but no one ever does anyway.  At least this one has phrases that you'll use.  (Such as Pah-ZHAH-luh-stah, nee PEE-sai v shtah-NEE.......   translation: Please don't go potty in your pants)

2.  Another book that I've absolutely fallen in love with is Mishka An Adoption Tale.
This book is a wonderfully written book about a little bear (Mishka) that is "adopted" into a family and given to a little boy who was being adopted from Russia.  It's very clever to have the dynamic of the bear's feelings along with the little boy's.  One of my favorite things in life is to read to my children.  This will, no doubt, be a popular read with Pasha.

We've also bought Mishka, but we bought a Russian CD for adoptive parents to help us learn how to speak. I'm not real good at looking at the broken down translation and speaking it correctly. I like to hear how it should be spoken first. I do like the phrase you listed. I will have to add that to our list.

Getting closer to Pasha each day!

I also love the adoption book by Natalie Gillespie. I forget the title but it has stuff on every aspect of adoption (even the commonly under addressed area of post placement issues). It was recommended to me by Howard Dayton when I called into his Money Matters program earlier this year.

We just gave our DD (adopted at age 5.5) the Mishka book for Christmas. She had to wait 6 months between trip one and trip two and it was very long and difficult for her, so as a fan of the author's previous book about Russian adoption (which our daughter got her first Christmas with us!) I was thrilled to find this one touching on the waiting angle. Our Dd loved it!

Hey guys,

I noticed that in a much earlier post you were looking for suggestions on good language programs or cds. I would suggest that you take a look at Pimsleur cd programs. I used a beginner level program that I saw at the Library in cd format and it helped me get a very good grasp on my learning early on. I'm not sure how far along you are, but the repetition throughout the 8 lessons lends itself to the learning process. Great for the car. A very good program for the computer that helps you learn words and short phrases is called Before You Know it. http://www.byki.com This has been such a helpful tool in learning the vocab. It is a free download and you can upgrade to ad features if you want to spend the money. It is similar to the world renowned Rosetta Stone in everyway but price.

Насладитесь! Скажете мне пожалуйста если я могу помочь.

Пока.

Cool - I hadn't heard of either of these books. We are using a variety of books and tapes to learn our Russian phrases but it's hard!

I have the Russian for adoptive families too and I love it! I've memorized a bunch of phrases but I really need to learn more, our oldest is 4 in February and knows NO english =)!
Mishka is on my list of books to buy for our boys.
