Skype

As we try to prepare for a big trip to Russia, I've found some interesting things. The most recent find has been "skype". Now I know that this is not an entirely new thing, but it's new to me! Skype is a fairly popular communication service that allows people to talk to each other (like a phone) but it's actually nothing more than an internet connection. The result is a FREE way to communicate when two people are FAR FAR away. Say, for example...... RUSSIA!

The other cool thing about skype is that you can connect your webcam (if you have one) to the conversation and be able to SEE the person you are talking to as well. Once again, you can imagine our excitment as it relates to our specific situation. The result of this fine technology is that our family will be able to see, hear and talk to our newly adopted children while still in Russia. (and did I mention it's FREE)

Additionally, we'll be able to talk to Hallie and Jake during a time where we will miss them terriblly. (for free!)

Free! Yea!

That's a great tip. I'll keep that in mind when it's our turn to make that big trip.

Hey, it was great fun to practice talking and seeing you on the computer screen using our new "skype" connection. I could get hooked on this -- asking to see all kinds of good stuff from your family - so instead of just hearing about what everyone did, I can see what was created (new dinner recipe, preschool craft project, concert flyers, etc.) or best of all, the twinkle in everyone's eye when we get the call that you will get to go visit Molly and Zac. We will keep our weblines open (or whatever they would be called.) Signing off for now. N&P

That is very cool. Wish I had known about that before. We purchased an international cell phone SIM card to be able to call our kids, so it was convenient, but certainly not free. We did send pictures over the phone, but not quite as cool as a webcam.

I don't know what region you guys are going to, but internet (wifi) was readily available in St. Petersburg and Moscow. Lots of internet cafes, in hotel lobbies, etc. We also had it in our apartment in St. Petes.
